My son is in Kindergarten. He also suffers from focal seizures. When my post count gets higher I'll post a link explaining what that is. Basically it's seziures in one part of the body.

Anyway he did well across the board except for fine motor skills. We're thinking that this may be because of the seizures. He has them often but they don't show any physical signs. This might be hampering his development somewhat. So we collected some of his work and we are taking it to his Neurologist. Honestly I don't like or trust his Neurologist and I am looking for another type of professional to help with this problem. Not sure where to turn. His Neurologistjust wants to keep medicating him and I'm not sure thats the answer. He does need the medication to control the seizures but there has to be another answer.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Ugh, I have zero experience with that. Is it possible that things would get better with some sort of physical therapy?

That's what I'm wondering but I don't know. It's such a struggle to get Ben to do anything that require fine motor skills. He gets frustrated with it so easily that we all usually end up in tears. We as parents need to learn how to teach him and for that I think that we need a professional. Just not sure what kind of a professional.

I would think that there has to be some exercises that he can do daily to improve his skills...but again, i know nothing on the subject.

Well im so sorry to hear this about your little boy...its amazing how many of us take our kids health for granted. I would think that you should be able to call some sort of motor doctor and explain the problem to them and they should be able to direct you in the right direction. I have never had to deal with this problem before so im really not sure who you can turn to for advice but im pretty sure a doctor should be able to help you out!

Good luck :)

I agree, I would either talk to his ped or the neurologist (and get a new one if you don't like him)
What about playing games to get his fine motor skills up. Things like Hi-O Cerry-o to pick up the cherries and put them in the baskets, or Operation or kids. Might help to make it more fun

We do that but any suggestions of games are surely welcome...We even bought Operation at a garage sale for 50 cents. He loves it but I think that he tries to make the buzzer go off. He has a weird sense of humor like his dad.

lol, what about doing things like puzzles as a family. Or maybe a light bright?

We do puzzles a lot but we never tried a light bright. That could be fun.

We saw an occupational therapist when Isabella was a little under a year to help with her fine motor skills (the infection that caused her hearing loss caused several other little problems too.) He was really awesome and we got the referral through a program called Baby Steps. He helped older children as well. She was younger so not sure if what we used would help.

Is the Baby Steps website just babysteps.com or something like that?

It was a program in California but there are so many like it nationally and they are called different things. A great way to find resources is 211(your county).org (for instance mine is 211lane.org) or call 211 (if it is established in your city.) It will connect you with community resources. We recently had a six week fundraiser for United Way and they taught us about that program. You could also directly contact your local chapter of the United Way.
