OK so my mom owns a daycare. I just was there visiting not that long ago and the school-age kids came in from a field trip. I asked her how they get from point A to point B and she said they have a big van. I asked her if she uses booster seats and she told me no!

She said it is stupid for big kids to use booster seats and also said that if they were in booster seats their heads would be over the back seat and that has got be more unsafe.

So, need some info to convince her to buy some boosters for her smaller school-agers!!!

I think at the very least she should ask the parents to leave the boosters for the kids when they're going on a field trip

Too bad her kids' parents probably don't use them either. She works in a crap part of town where the state funds about 80% of the kids, who mostly get dropped off at 6:00 am and are there until 6:00 pm. But just because the kids parents don't use them doesn't mean she shouldn't either, IMHO.

What state is she in? What are the restraint laws there? Do the vans have lap and shoulder belts? What her daycare is doing may be "legal" but not necessarily safe. High back boosters would solve the low seat back problem. :) Of course, the issue of funding for boosters is a problem. Asking parents to provide them isn't always a good option.

There are some agencies locally here that provide that sort of thing for daycare providers (ours was through the Lane Community College.) Something like that may help convince her.

how many kids would she need boosters for?

As the daycare owner, if she transports kids who aren't properly restrained, besides the risks of injuring kids, she's setting herself up for liability issues.

There used to be a Cartoon Academy in my area that offered after school classes and transportation from school. They used an SUV with no boosters. I asked the owner about this and his reply was, "It's not my problem." I respectfully stated, "It will be your problem if you're not following child restraint laws and a child gets injured in your vehicle." He promptly changed his tune and started asking more questions. I donated two boosters, along with CPS literature, to the academy and was thanked profusely.

It may be worth contacting a CPS Tech in the area to discuss this with your mother.

If they are not wearing seat belts then they dont need boosters. If she has a van that dosnt have the head rests then she needs the boosters with backs on them.

Sadly here once kids are school age, 5yo, most are riding without any form of booster around here :( Even though state law says 8yo but it isnt really enforced. I see it every single day during the school year.
