My dd has peanut, egg & tree nut allergies/sensitivities to varying degrees. Mostly affecting her skin but can cause her asthma to flair. Very sensitive skin, eczema.

I just picked her up from school with the most horrific case of hive I have ever seen on her :( It covers 98% of her chest and back. Some on her upper arms down to the elbow. Down to her bumm and waistline in front.

She also has a runny nose (not that unusual for her) itchy watery eyes and the bottom of her face. The school nurse went to her room to check for anything unusual like someone bringing in nuts etc but found nothing. The kids had muffins for breakfast, blueberry and cherry the cherry had nuts. DD had the blueberry something she has eaten many times before with no issues. But I dont think they had the cherry the other times. The nurse dosnt know if they where on the same tray. So cross contamination is a very high possibility.

Also this morning the shirt I gave her to wear was given to her by a cousin. I usually wash the clothes because she uses a fabric soften and dryer sheets me and dh react badly to those dont know about dd since I havnt tried. But I may not have washed this shirt. Because of the placement of the hives I cant help but wonder if it was the washing detergent or the dryer sheets that have caused this.

Here are pictures I took of dd:

wow poor kid! At least she is still smiling and strutting her stuff! lol

I would guess a detergent as well. Does she have GI issues with her nut allergies?

My friends dd is allergic to nuts (HIGHLY) but she can't be near nuts of any type. Air contamination gets her! She's only 9 months old so its easy to control now but it will be harder when she is older. They can't go to the family Christmas party (or any parties) with her because if something had a nut in it and was cooked the whole house is contaminated!

For her eating a nut/s anything with it in there etc usually causes skin issues but nothing like this. but then she hasnt ever eaten a nut on purpose or anything contaminated by nuts that I could prevent.

Up until this year her school was nut free because of a boy who was allergic like the little girl you mentioned. Cant even be near a house where nuts have been without risk. But he went on to highschool and they have brought nuts back into the school :(

That's terrible I'm so sorry. Vic has eczema so we have to be careful about detergents and things of the like.

Her teacher called to check on her and was telling me how she was nauseous this morning before the hives appeared so it looks like we are indeed dealing with a nut contamination thing :(

Dh's aunt is the lead cafateria lady so I will talk to her tomorrow about cross contamination and beg her to limit nuts of any kind if she can and see if she cant be extra careful with dd's food so that we can keep her safe.

Her reaction is by far the worse I have seen and that means it is escalating and next time she could very well have an anaphalactic reaction. I am also going to get in touch with her allergist and request a script for an epi pen just in case.

She is doing better. Still pink but the raised part is gone for the most part. Weepy because of the benadryl and being tired.

Going to be a up and down night for me checking on her but that is ok. I will start making calls first thing in the morning to get her an epi pen ASAP. I am hoping the allergist will call one in without an appt. But she will probably want to see us so that whe can instruct us on its use. The only problem I have with that is she has always missed so much she is in danger of being held back. Stupid absentee rules that we have here

I always knew this was a possibility but I had so hoped she would outgrow this as the dr's thought she would. I am so thankful that things didnt get worse.

You cant even tell anything out of the ordinary happened to her yesterday. Her skin is back to normal and she is her usual self.

I called this morning and got her allergist to call in the epi pen so she now has one at school and one for home. I take her tuesday to the allergist to discuss an emergency plan and discuss what happened. I got prints of the pictures to take with me so the Dr. can see how bad it was it defies description your have to see it to get how bad it was..

I agree about the pics. At first I didn't know what was wrong with her till you see the bottom of her back, then you can see that the whole thing is one big hive! poor kid. So can she stay in school for it? so she doesn't miss anymore

She is back in school and on every 4 hour benadryl. Thankfully christmas break is the next 2 weeks so she wont miss school when I take her to the allergist.

Everyone at school is now aware of what can happen and they are being extra careful. They had fruit salad today with nuts which they told me about this morning. Her teacher was told to have all the kids wash up after lunch.

I would prefer they go totally nut free like in the past but unfortunatly I dont have the pull to cause that to happen :(

all schools in Texas are nut free. Annoying for those that like peanut butter1 lol but totally appropriate since it can be an air born allergy.
Sorry your school does not work with you more.

I'm happy she's feeling better. I get hives like that from PCN. It's not fun at all. It just makes sense to me to have all schools nut free. That is deadly allergy. I wonder what all you would have to do to get the school to go back to nut free. I wonder if a letter from you and a letter from DD doctor may be enough. I'd imagine the school would like to avoid a lawsuit for negligence. Yes?

It is so unfortunate when kids are allergic to things like nuts and they can have a reaction like this. Thankfully as bad as this was that it did not appear to last long.

As for the school, I would visit their website or go into the office and request a copy of their mission and/or vision statements. In those documents I guarantee that they will say they are a "safe school". When you see those words, let them know that they are not being a "safe school" and that you want them to adhere to their own policies. If that doesn't work, go to the school board. I did this with our daughters school about a very dangerous parking situation that clearly was not safe for the kids and since doing that they have redesigned their parking lot. Sad that it took something like that to get action but it had to be done. Good luck!
