Money and Relatives

Recently a very close family relative asked me to give him $2000 so that he could have his teeth fixed. I said no.

I have money, and could give it to him, and really wouldn't miss it. In the case of this relative he has lived his entire adult life getting relatives to pay for emergancy\critical type problems because he's never be able to manage his money so that he's self-sufficient. A majority of his life his parent were the ones who gave him money to pay for things (ie car repairs, rent, etc). When they died, he got about $100 thousand, which would have been good enough for him to retire and pay for the basics. And he got a share of their home. Their will had it structure so that he would get monthly payments for 20+ years, but he didn't like that limiation, so he went to one of those finance companies that buy out those type deals at 50 cents on dallor. so instead of about $150K, he got $75K in cash. Well, to get to the point, he spent blew all $75K in about 3 years and was broke, and had no assets. It was during the internet boom, and he beleive he could out guess wallstreet and turn that $75K into $75 million.

Now is gets about 1000 per month from the goverment and that is all he has for income, so when critical problems arise (needing alot of work done on his teeth) he turns to relatives and asked for money. I am his closet relative, so he always comes to me first. A few years ago I made it clear that he needs to manage his fincial affairs without my involvement. But still 1-2 per year he finds himself into emergancy sitution with no money.

So what would you do if you had a sister\brother or maybe even one of your kids that had no ability to manage money. They are adults, you can't keep them from blowing their money, yet they always turn to you to bail them out, time after time. They promise it will be the last time, but there never is a last time, there's always next time.

I have been extremely busy lately and for the most part I have not been able to visit as often as I would like and that I need to. Work has been incredibly hectic and even when the weekends come around I am trying to catch up on stuff around the house. I am actually flying out to Florida in the morning due to my work and I will be there until Friday. I will still be able to visit even though I am away on business. Since I will have time to spare at night to access the Internet from my hotel room I plan to visit more often while I am away. :)

I will be back in action around here soon though. I did want to post something so nobody was concerned and that you know the commitment to getting us back on track is definitely here. I will be back tomorrow night at some time, from a remote location far far away. :p Have a good week everyone and I will visit as often as possible.
