That's not an option here. Earlier today the temperature was in the mid teens and our cars don't heat up fast enough. If I were to put a blanket on him, he'd just throw it aside. He doesn't have a thick coat so the harness really needs to fit over him with what he currently wears. I did adjust it and it seems much better. I will be checking where the shoulder straps are compared to his shoulders so he may still need a new car seat.

Woah woah woah... why??? Nobody ever told me that. I have an old car and even if I let it warm up for a half an hour I still feel like he should be wearing a coat in the car in the winter. I can't imagine going from one place to another when he was little and in a snowsuit, taking it off to put him in, and then completely redressing him to take him back out. What? Somebody help me understand this.

Regarding winter wear - Puffy, thick coats are not recommended in car seats. The puffy insulation compresses during a crash, which equals a loose harness, which is very unsafe. My kids wear winter coats with Thinsulate or some other thin, warm insulation. Another option is to have the child wear a polar fleece jacket in the car seat and then after buckling the harness put a winter coat on backwards over their arms on top of the harness. Does that make sense? Actually, many toddlers won't tolerate that, so when I was a CPS Tech, I recommended kids wear a jacket with thin, light weight, warm insulation, such as Thinsulate. I live in New England and totally understand kids can't go without coats during winter months.

Oohh that makes sense, well then I'm good to go. I got Eli this really nice, very warm coat from the Gap recently that's pretty thin and lightweight, but extremely warm. No puffy at all. It's really cute, I'll have to show you guys a picture. You know those black coats everyone is wearing right now? It's like those. It's made of wool on the outside and has that warm (but thin) thermal inside. So I think he's pretty secure.

Yeah, I am sure Kaytee was referring to putting a coat or blanket on a child in a car seat if taking off their coat is an option. I know our son wouldn't like that so it won't work for us. He commonly takes off his hat and gloves while in the car and it can be real fun trying to make sure he doesn't do that.

I ALWAYS take Nichole's coat off in the carseat. Its just too big. Hers is just a wool coat, not poofy, but it makes it to hard to get her straps tight on her. So I wrap her in a blanket and then before we get out I put her coat back on. I do that in Chicago as well. Its kinda cold there lol

For us, that would be just counter-productive and at least at this age I think he's pretty secure in the seat with his coat on.

Yeah I keep several blankets in the car (I wash them weekly) to put over the kids.
