We are extremely happy to announce some new features here at NowParenting that we hope you will enjoy as well. We have signed up with Google to offer additional services for anyone that is interested in using them. Here is an overview of what is being offered:


Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Talk are powerful tools that can save your company money and time.
New! Voice and video chat now available in Gmail.


Google Docs, Google Video and Google Sites complement traditional office software to make teamwork easier. Companies or departments can use these apps on their own to be more productive.


Email security, archiving and encryption, powered by Postini, complement Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes and other solutions. Web security is also available.



E-mail Accounts

You now get personalized e-mail accounts using the Gmail interface and your e-mail address will end with @nowparenting.com. Below are some of the features offered with this service.

Chat with Google Talk

Anyone using a NowParenting Mail account will be able to use the integrated Google Talk feature to chat with other members of the site.



Calendar

• Get people together easily – Just pick a time (based on when people are free) and enter meeting details. Google Calendar will send invitations and keep track of RSVPs.
• Share project calendars – Share whole calendars site-wide or with specific people. Other members can have editing rights and see shared events alongside their own schedules.
• Show event information in context – Embed an internal calendar in Google Sites or publicly on your website, no programming required.

Documents

• Work together without the hassles of attachments – Members can share the same online copy of each doc, spreadsheet or presentation. All revisions are saved and recoverable.
• Present and publish through the web – Presentations can be delivered to remote audiences, and documents and spreadsheets can be published internally for employees to view.
• Interoperate with traditional file formats – Import and collaboratively edit or publish from .doc, .xls, .csv, .ppt, .txt, .html, .pdf and other formats. You can export as well.

Types of files that you can upload:

Documents (up to 500KB)

• HTML files and plain text (.txt).
• Microsoft Word (.doc), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw).

Presentations (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web, 500KB via email)

• Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps).

Spreadsheets (up to 1MB)

• Comma Separated Value (.csv).
• Microsoft Excel (.xls) files and OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods).

PDF Files (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web)


Sites

• Make useful information accessible – Create an intranet or let project teams build sites to capture and share departmental knowledge.
• Share files simply – File versioning is done automatically, so it's easy for people to make updates and get the latest version. Supported formats include .doc, .xls, .csv, .ppt, .txt, .pdf and more.
• Unify content from many sources – Display Google Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, YouTube videos, Picasa slideshows and gadgets without any programming skills.
• Find information instantly – Google search technology is built-in, so employees can find useful company information as easily as searching the Internet.

Benefits

The benefits of using a NowParenting Mail account include the ability to keep your private e-mail address private. Even though most people would not share their e-mail address through the forum, if they wanted to do that and ensure that their primary e-mail address is still private, this is one way to do just that. With a NowParenting e-mail account you can even setup the Gmail interface to forward all messages to your primary e-mail account. So if you do not want to login to multiple sites for e-mail, you don't have to.

Another good reason to use this type of account is because of all the other benefits you receive. Being able to chat with other NowParenting members instantly or having the ability to share documents among various people is certainly going to make doing those tasks that much easier. You can even create your own "site" and add various types of content including text, videos, pictures, etc. to share with other NowParenting members or even people outside of this forum.

As shown in the initial post above, there are many more benefits to having a NowParenting Mail account. These features are certainly going to enhance your membership here at NowParenting.com.

How do I signup?

To begin all you need to do is create a new thread in the Help Desk forum found at the bottom of the main page. Please provide the following information in your request:

• First Name
• Last Name

You can choose not to use your real name if you wish. The first name and last name entries are required but to protect your privacy you are more than welcome to specify nicknames, abbreviations, etc. We will then manually create your NowParenting Mail account which will give you access to all the features listed above. Once you have received a response from us that your account has been created, simply visit http://mail.nowparenting.com to begin using these services.

Please note that the NowParenting Mail System is available for any member with 200 posts or above. We apologize if this leaves you out at the moment. We are not trying to stop anyone from using these services, however, we need to ensure that we do not give access to everyone as soon as they signup with the forum as that could cause problems when someone registers with bad intentions toward this site and its members. Once you reach 200 posts, we are more than happy to create an account for you.

NowParenting Mail Guidelines

There has to be some rules regarding usage of these new services. These are pretty standard and they are meant to maintain a pleasant experience for all members with an account.

• Abuse of the NowParenting Mail Account, including sending of spam, harassing messages, creating content of a negative nature, or promoting any illegal activity is strictly prohibited. Anyone found to be doing any of these things will lose their access to the NowParenting Mail System and may be removed from the forum as well.
• If an abuse report is received and we are able to determine that the report is valid, depending on the nature of the reported issue, we may contact you to discuss ways to prevent that from happening again. We are not required to contact you, though, so we ask that you use the system as you would any other e-mail account you have. If you do not like receiving spam, harassing messages, or anything similar, then don't send those type of messages.
• These guidelines may be updated at any time with or without notice.

One of the cool features of this new service is you can now communicate with other people (not just NowParenting members) using two popular Instant Messaging services. First you can use the built in Google Talk which comes with all Gmail accounts. I have already been chatting with a few people here that are not specifically signed up with NowParenting Mail. On top of that you can also use your AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) account with the new NowParenting Mail interface to chat with your contacts there. It certainly helps to have all these features available in one location and hopefully for those using the service they are finding this to be a beneficial addition to the site.
