Unhappy Eating troubles

My kids basically eat chicken nuggets and/or hot dogs. There are a couple of other things that they will eat but that's mostly it. It makes me nuts that they won't even try anything else. Also Bennett used to be a good eater but lately he just wants nuggets. Maddie has always been that way.

I think that it's ridiculous to make 3 different dinners every night. Plus I worry about them nutritionally speaking. Nuggets and hot dogs can't be good to have everyday.

Vic thinks it's just a phase and I'm sure that eventually they'll grow out of it but in the mean time it's driving me nuts. Is there anything that I can and/or should do about this?

Well personally I wouldn't make them special meals...you eat what's on your plate or you don't eat at all in my house and I promise they won't starve to death. I would make it a rule that they are to eat at least one bite of everything to at least try it. Picky eating habits don't usually go away on their own

I'm with Fallon. "you get what you get and you dont throw a fit" a little diddy DD says. She has missed a few meals not willing to try/eat what was served. The kids get 3 meals a day plus snacks so missing one meal wont hurt them. Maybe lunch could be nuggets/dogs then have a normal dinner and if they dont eat they go to bed hungry and maybe they will reconsider eating dinner.

Same crap with Delaney. All she ever wants is chicken nuggets, and it doesn't help that her mother lets her get away with it most of the time. Personally, she eats what I make. If we're going out, I'll say: "You're not having chicken nuggets, period. Pick something else to eat or you're not eating". Works all the time.

yay I would also go with the bite thing. Though if it was me, its one bite for age of child up to like a 4 year old then just stick with 4 after that. So if the child is 8, they still only have to have 4 bites.

I also don't make seperate meals unless its something I know she won't eat. Spicey schrimp or something, then I would make her something seperate. Thats rare though.

I'd go with the lunch they can have the nuggets or whatever, but dinner is dinner and everyone eats the same thing. I would start telling them like today, "starting tomorrow you eat what we make for dinner" give them a warning, then tomorrow dinner, they eat it or they are hungry.

Yeah I make it a try a bite rule here. Once in a while I'll make a seperate meal if it's a special situation. Hannah won't eat fish. It makes her sick so I'll make her a burger and the rest of us fish. She at least has tried it.

Do they like mac and cheese? It's pretty easy to hide some small chunks of brocolli and cauliflower in there, bulks it up too and adds vitamins. I've seen the pickiest kids go nuts over it.

Is there any veggies they like? If they want nuggets, fine, but only if they have, save some cucumbers, and carrots with dip, or something like that.

And not sure if this will help, but here's a healthy "quesadilla hot dogs" recipe, they may enjoy.

Kids love quesadillas. And kids love hot dogs. This is one of my favorite healthy cheese quesadilla recipes for kids.

Low-fat kosher hot dogs give these quesadillas the meaty, salty hot dog taste without all the unhealthy junk found in regular hot dogs. And whole wheat tortills are packed with fiber.
Hot Dog Quesadillas
  • 6 low-fat kosher hot dogs (such as Hebrew National)
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 4 10" whole wheat tortillas (such as Mission Foods)
  • 1 cup chili beans
  • 1/2 cup shredded low-fat cheddar cheese
Slice hot dogs into 1/4" slices. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place hot dogs in skillet and saute until browned, about 5 minutes. Remove hot dogs. Add oil to skilet. Place 1 tortilla in skillet, heating until lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Using tongs, turn tortilla over. Spread about 1/2 cup of hot dog slices over half of the tortilla. Top with 1/4 cup of beans and 2 Tbsp. of cheese. Fold the untopped half of the tortilla over. Cook until cheese is melted and tortilla is lightly browned on the bottom. Slide onto a plate. Repeat with remaining tortillas and toppings.
Serves 4.

Do they like any fruit? If they refuse to eat any veggies at all, maybe you can coax them to eat the nuggets with some fruits, whatever they like. I think as long as they are getting their servings of stuff, they'll be fine.

And I have to agree they won't starve. At home I ate what mom made or I didn't eat. Now it only took a few meals for her to realize I actually did hate cream corn with everything I had in me, so she did not force me to have any. Parents can usually tell the difference between truly disliking a food and just throwing a fit to get junk food

Hope some of this helps!
