As millions of kids get ready to take to the streets on Halloween in a few weeks, it is good to list some reminders that we all may need to make note of. Consider these Halloween safety tips when you send your kids out to trick-or-treat.
- Help your child choose a costume that is safe and allows them to see and be seen. Completely covering their face or having them wear dark colors can be dangerous.
- Accompany your child while trick-or-treating if they are younger and need assistance when going door-to-door. Teenagers may not need this type of attention but it is still a good idea to know where they are that night and that they check in if any plans change.
- Teach your kids to stay on sidewalks and to only cross streets after checking that no cars are around.
- Each child should carry a "glow stick" or flash light for better safety.
- Always have your kids go with someone else while trick-or-treating. Preferably an adult should accompany the kids. Children should never trick-or-treat alone.
- Only go to houses that have their porch lights on or that you know real well.
- Inspect ALL candy before allowing your children to have anything. This way you will know that they have nothing that has been tampered with.
- If in doubt, throw it away. If a piece of candy looks like it has been opened, toss it in the garbage.
- Have Fun! Make sure to take pictures of your little ones as they have a great time trick-or-treating.
Halloween can be a fun time and it allows your children to enjoy dressing up into their favorite characters while collecting candy. Following these simple safety tips can help to ensure that the night will go by smoothly.
