Spam in Gmail Account

Anyone else with a Gmail account, did you experience an issue today with getting tons of spam? I have received more than 550 bounced messages from e-mail addresses all over the place apparently showing that I tried to send the following message:

From: "United Nations Fund"
To:
Date: Sun, 31 Aug 2008 04:40:48 +0100
Subject: UN Foundation Grant. YOTHKVOLOL

United Nations Foundation,
Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 400
Washington, D.C. 20036

Dear Sir/Madam,

UN Foundation Grant.

This is to notify you that you have been chosen By the Board of trustees of the above International (Charity & HumanDevelopmental) Organization, as one of the final recipients of a Cash Grant/Donation for your personal development...

The message is much longer but there is no sense in posting the whole thing here. Of course I never sent this but it almost looks like someone logged into my Gmail account and sent this bogus message. I forwarded this information to Google but I don't think they respond and who knows if they even look into these things. My worry is that someone did falsely send messages looking like they came from me. I'm hoping I am not the only one as that would confirm that this was some bug on Google's side.

Interesting. I checked and it didn't happen to my gmail account. However, I have seen what you have talked about. I have a personal domain and email. What spammer will do is send spam to all kinds of email addresses, for example, sdf12331@nealnr.com. My best guess is that they are targeting "Catch-all" accounts.

I get those consistantly in my comcasat account but never in my gmail

Since yesterday when this all began I have 550+ messages in my junk folder. Thankfully most of the e-mail addresses this spam was sent to do not exist. Either that or the servers blocked them all. Either way very few people saw the message. The funny thing is there is nothing in my sent folder so whoever sent this did so by faking the message to look like it came from me. I doubt anyone logged into my Gmail account. Just to be safe I am running some anti-spyware and anti-virus software to make sure.

Mark, it is possible that spammer is just using your email address as the sender so when it bounces it comes back to you. I have had that happen to me fequently.

Yeah, that's what I figured happened. And of course Google has not responded to me yet. I also received my first hate mail today. Someone that did get the message (supposedly from me) sent me a message to leave him alone and stop e-mailing him.

I understand getting that type of message is frustrating but so many people don't understand how e-mail works and how easily it can be faked. From what I can tell, only a few people actually got the message (that I know of). I could be wrong though.
